I find it interesting that you write about data life cycle but what you describe is when the data enters an analytical environment. To truly understand data life cycle you need to start where the data is created. At the business process. Why is it created? For what operational/business purpose? What is it used for? When/why does it change and what process event triggers a change/delete of the data point etc. This is important also to understand when ”sourcing” the data to your analytical environment.

This is a great point Patrik, and I completely agree with you. There is the data creation within the business process and the reasons why. But the problem with mapping that out is there are endless possibilities and sources.

That is why I start at the sources, as nowadays most things are automated and most data comes from technology tools. The best way to break it down as internal vs. external sources.

What you are talking about gets into data ownership and business process mapping, which is something I will write about in teh future
